Improving skills for young people

Recruitment is a huge challenge for employers of all sizes and from all sectors at the moment.  Businesses often tell us that young people lack the skills needed in employees. Schools are desperate to improve opportunities for their students to get real experience of the workplace, but don’t have the time to spend developing relationships with employers.

Did you know that young people from disadvantaged backgrounds are twice as likely to end up out of education or employment than their better off peers? Just four or more meaningful contacts with employers reduce the chances of this happening by 86%.

Finding Work Experience

Yet most schoolwork experience is heavily dependant on young people finding work experience through family contacts. The odds are stacked against teenagers whose families don’t have connections with exciting industries and who don’t have jobs which can take their children on placements.

We believe that the whole community benefits and our economy thrives if our young people have access to good quality work experience. We’re here to support everyone in making it happen by building up a bank of high-quality work experience placements to inspire our young people and help the local economy to thrive.

Why offer work experience?

We’ve heard from a number of employers who’ve told us they’d love to help young people understand their business, but no one’s ever asked them. If you need convincing, here are some of the benefits.

By offering work experience your organisation could:

Build a talent pipeline and find future employees in the local area.

Learn from a fresh, young mindset – young people can bring fresh ideas and approaches.

Build your brand in the local area by demonstrating your commitment to the next generation. Give employees development opportunities through supporting work experience students.

Work experience does not have to be the traditional one week in the office we all remember from our school days.

Why not give a group of students a project which meets a real business need for your organisation. Do you want to get feedback on a product from younger customers, or get some ideas for marketing on the latest social media platform? All these areas play to teenagers’ strengths.

How to get involved

Is your organisation passionate about inspiring the next generation? Do you want to offer a young person an experience that could help shape their future? Could your organisation also benefit from a young person’s feedback or involvement?
